The initiative

Around 2.5 years ago, a group of researchers of the Faculties of Health, Medicine, and Life Sciences and of Psychology and Neuroscience decided to join forces and develop a new research line at Maastricht University, now called 'EpiCogneticUM'. Within this line of research, we intend to examine the role of epigenetic regulation in human cognition, especially memory processing. We will collaborate with several universities in the Netherlands and within Europe.

If we have funding, we intend to assess cognitive performance and brain activity in 2000 healthy volunteers. Additionally, we would draw blood from the participants to examine genes involved in epigenetic regulation of cognition, namely SNP profiles and DNA methylation of candidate genes. The data will next be placed into a knowledge base that enables us to link cognitive function to (epi)genetic profiles. More information about the knowledge base, genes of interest, and cognition can be found on this website.
